Case, is a young man around the age of 24, other than that the book really doesn’t give any other physical description of him. Case is, or was a black-market hacker, so to say. He would work for anyone, doing whatever hacking they needed, as long as they could “finance” him for his "talents." That is until he took his talents too far and tried to still from an employer. In return the employer fried his nervous system with a mycotoxin; which prohibited him from ever jacking into the matrix and surfing cyberspace again.
Now, Case, at the beginning of the book, doesn’t have his ability to hack into the matrix, do to being poisoned by the mycotoxin. So instead of being one of the top piraters in cyberspace, he is reduced to basic, petty, robbery. Because of his inability to hack, Case goes into a deep depression, which leads to some nasty drugs. Then, also because of his depression, his new work seems to get sloppier and sloppier and in response to this, he gets into harder, nastier drugs. When you put all this together, its makes it seems as if he is on his way to a suicidal end.
Now two other important characters are Armitage and Molly. Now Molly is hired by Armitage as a muscle; fore she had been physically altered to enhance her abilities. She has a mirror, lens type things over her eyes to enhance her vision along with retractable razor blades under her finger nails. She has also been hired to find and brings in Case for a job interview.
Armitage is a middle man ring leader. Now that Case has been brought to him, he offers a chance of a lifetime to him. Armitage offers to have Case’s nervous system fixed so he can jack into the matrix once again, for a fee of course. Case jumps at this opportunity. So Armitage heals him, but in order to make sure that Case wont double cross him; he puts a dormant mycotoxin in his body during the operation. So if Case ever chickens out and splits, he gets to go through the mycotoxin again.
Now that this was done, Armitage sends Case and Molly into the matrix to free the true ring leaser of this crusade. Armitage, who is following orders, by an AI called Wintermute, tells Case to free him. Wintermute wanted the best who could bypass his programming boundary limits to his abilities, which are holding him back from his goal of becoming a super intelligence. Case, as good as he is, manages to do this, and the mycotoxin is killed. Once Wintermute is free from his programming limits finally, he tells everyone that he has now be able to decode some transmissions that he picked up out in space from another AI somewhere out there. So in the end, Case once again can hack the matrix, and use his special “abilities” as well, so he’s happy and everything worked out in the end for him.
